I wonder what wanders the mind of an addict
What would make a person act erratic?

Dollars and a quick high, automatic
And when he can’t feed his habit
Its murder tactics

Early in the morning, all is tranquil
The sounds of a new dawn, time is at a standstill
A thunderous horn of a transit bus trembles the air
A broken street hit with poverty and despair
The hammers of builders working on a project renovation
The daring scent of coffee lingers from a nearby gas station
Suddenly everyone’s blood stopped
The silence broken by gunshot
Six shots, rapid fire
First responders call “situation dire”
Mass hysteria shrouds the crime scene
A 27-year old man is dying
The sirens elate loud
The silence became a shout
Four bystanders became a crowd
Starting as a drug dispute gone south
When one man burglarized another’s house
The remaining pieces, the police can’t figure out
The victim packed with a hand pistol and a pound
Bullet wounds to his neck and chest
The victim dies, laboring in cardiac arrest
Someone in heaven knows something isn’t right
When drugs value more than a human being’s life

I wonder what wanders the mind of an addict
What would make a person act erratic?

Inside, resides the deepest threat
The snowball effect
Now her life’s a wreck

A young woman in a hospital bed
Life hanging by a hostile thread
Her breathing, shakily faint
Medicine running her veins
Her heart monitor vibrates
Her pulse steadily slows
An oxygen mask cups her nose
Her complexion fading old, as pale as a ghost
Cold from her fingers right down to her toes
Watching from a distance is her only little brother
His eyes well up and his heart begins to flutter
Remembering the carefree girl she was in the early days
Childhood was purely play, but not to stay
Now he misses her in every way
With life’s problems, dopamine in prescription pills
Offered her an escape to society’s wicked ills
Instead of graduating high school, traded up dope
Inhaling the thick smoke, her quick antidote
A family intervention took her off for two months
But relapsed to smoke two small blunts
Nowhere to go, nowhere to run
Fell into the insanity
Ignored her family
It became all she thought about
The only thing she talked about
Until her only remedy became her greatest enemy
Suffered an aneurism, led to a stroke
Lie for weeks in a coma, from the toxic smoke
And still her brother’s trying to figure out
How such a girl so blissful and loud
Such a girl, so wishful and proud
Became a vegetable on the couch
Through it all, he doesn’t blame her
Letting out a mourning sigh
He believes the drugs changed her
She couldn’t spot the warning signs
No matter how hard she tried
She couldn’t deny
The addiction was too hard to fight

I wonder what wanders the mind of an addict
What would make people act erratic?
Inside, resides the deepest threat
The snowball effect
Now their life’s a wreck
Dollars and a quick high, automatic
And when they can’t feed this habit
Its murder tactics
Tragic
