You can't do it, they sneered
You can't make it over that mountain
All of them, swaying, waiting.

But I knew I could.

Eyes following me, expecting failure from the start
Their hard stares pricked all over
Until now I was numb
Nothing hurt or distracted me.

Because I knew I could.

Set on my goal, I thought of nothing else
Don't let it get to you, coach whispered
They don't know what you're capable of
They don't know you.

But I know I can.

Blinding cheers muted, shattering screams shut out
Piercing stares like ice melted and blank stares avoided
Colorful posters waving in distracting desperation ignored
Only our fans knew our real secret.

Because I know I can.

Fingers spreading wide enough to grab the sun
My arm powering through my swing
Impact so hard the bleachers tremble
Seizing the moment everyone has anxiously awaited.

I can.

Nothing moving but blood and adrenaline pumping through my veins
Number 12 races the ball to the floor
Her terrified eyes catch mine as she and the ball meet
The action surges again and victory cheers erupt.

I did.
