After All

Is it so hard for them to believe That this isn’t the woman I was raised to be I was raised to stand tall And face my fears and my downfalls But I never would have known that I would face this And experience injustice and be put in a list A long list of women with the same dilemma as me With lightening in our eyes striking our stormy sea But even though I am not alone, what about me? I have been forced into pleasure A sinful treasure Neglected infinitely by society Who said it was alright to be Legitimately raped Or was it illegitimately? Swimming in a pool of blood flow I wonder why my uterus didn’t know That he forced his penis down its throat And gave me this child to tote Whom I don’t know to keep or throw Into that sea full of women Who are in the same boat I’m in Trying to get away with murder But this is something we will never get away from Because society thinks we’re dumb Like we sit at home and say, where’d this baby come from? We are not dumb! We are invoked ! By those men who raped us Pinned our vaginas on their mantles and scouted for more! While we cry on the bathroom floor After leaving the clinic After we made that decision After they made that incision After all, we are women

A friend of mine experienced a situation similar to what is discussed in the poem, so I wrote it for her.
