After the Explosion of Atom Bombs / Abu Karim

Piles of straw burning on.

The omnivorous tongues of fire are snatching in

their stomachs large trees, herbs, birds and fowls

and all that bear any sign of home.

Nowhere such nakedness among men to bask

with this fire. No sign of human habitation anywhere.

Here there was an adolescent girl

blushed with the feeling of first love,

a mother drenched with curiosity and immeasurable affection,

an old man obsessed with the memories of youth.

But now no woman with any prospect of a mother of the future.

Utter cruelty dominates here with an iron hand

without corn, rain, potency or blood.

Our world has turned Auhollah;

please, someone of you tell her

touching which magic wand

who that Eskimo is to come and inspire

life in the stony earth.
