Afterthought

I was always there for you

When you needed me

Let you cry on my shoulder

In your misery

Thought of you when I woke up

And when I went to sleep

Then I realized—

You are dead to me

Where are you now that I need you

I’ve been left to hang dry

Too many times

You only call on my number when you want something

I replied and replied and replied

But I have died, yeah I’ve died, died inside

Why don’t you call me

Just to say hello

Meet up with me in person

Not just over the phone

I’ve given everything

That I have left

So do me a favor

And get off my chest

I’m done doing you favors

Being your right hand man

When you don’t even care

To lend me a hand

Friends are there for each other

And you’re not there for me

I’m the ghost in the room

And you don’t seem to see

I now know I’m an afterthought

I’ve thought this through

You shot your shot

You had your chance

And that fell through

So I guess this means

I’m through with you

Good luck trying

To win me back

I know my worth

And that’s a fact

I won’t be there

For you again

Have a taste

Of your own medicine

Funny to think

I used to call you friend

There was a point

Where I’d catch your fall

But now I know

Not to return your call

Because to you

I mean nothing at all

Look at all

The pain you brought

Why don’t you try being

the afterthought

I write in my free time whenever I feel strongly about a topic or need to get something off of my chest. Poetry has been a very therapeutic outlet for me through the years. I enjoy sharing my poems in hopes that they connect with someone, and I enjoy reading poems by other poets, too!
