Ain’t It Funny
When I think of how quickly I’d grown up
I can’t help but laugh
Aint it funny
Baby girl ain’t so baby anymore
I used to be afraid of the dark now I’m just afraid of what lurks within it
I’m paranoid
Petrified
Paralyzed with fear
I can’t breathe feeling like hands are wrapped around my neck
And this neck is so sore
Baby girl got too grown for her own body
They thought they could take that away from me
Make a shallow shadow out of a woman
But she was still just a baby girl
Aint it funny
I used to think the monsters were my worst nightmares
Now I realize there are men behind those masks
Seeping from under my bed
Creeping from out of my closet
Trying to come for me
When they wrap their hands around this neck and nobody there to give me a hand
I had to learn to fight for myself
Stay alert, carry pepper spray, never walk alone, always lock my doors
Feeling like I’m hiding in my own shadows
Running in circles trying to find some air
I still can’t breathe
The hands keep getting tighter around this neck
and I can’t fight them off much longer
Baby girl used to be so full of hope
Aint it funny
They continue to break baby girl down
‘Til there’s no baby
Til there’s no girl
‘Til there’s just...
shadow
