Like Alexandria

Dearest Alex,

Like Alexandria,

They could build empires,

Literally build them,

With lovely yellow rooftops,

Imperialism from the grassroots.

Equality.

Café’s on street corners.

Alex.

They are knit sweaters, gray.

Sitting in window sills,

Slipping away,

To a Neverland of text.

It’s art. They’re art.

An underestimated eradication

Of black and white wonders.

Like books collecting dust,

They forget how great they are,

How they shine though stained glass,

To know them,

Is to take on their quirks,

Like the protagonist,

To enjoy to the point of assimilation.

How satisfactory,

Greeting favorite characters,

Like old friends

In your reflection.

To Alex,

Like Alexandria,

Like yellow rooftops

And gray knit sweaters.

I wrote this to a close friend of mine for Christmas this year. They mean a lot to me and I think sometimes we all need a reminder that we're pretty amazing people!
