Alexa's View

The sand is both soft and coarse, but of course she knows that

The sky seemed about to open up so it was time we stood but instead we sat.

Turbulent waters thrashed around us but Alexa didn’t even look up

Pieces of the sky chipped off and fell around us like pieces of a broken tea cup.

She didn’t mind, because she never left her spot

Lofty on her throne perched on that outcrop of rock.

Someone had told the two of us that we were destined to fail

So one of us swam to the shore and one of us just flailed.

I didn’t sink to the bottom, I could not consider the possibility

That statistics were not on our side, but this was not about probability.

I’m not a number, Alexa, and neither are you

Please just help me up, try to fix your attitude.

You’re not a princess, you’re not a queen

Though you’re just as likely to end up on the guillotine.

I don’t want to be another nameless face

Passing from time to time, from place to place.

This is where my journey begins, right here next to you
