All Alone

I watched her walk through the door

Into the sea of students

Laughter and happiness engulfing her

Her stature was sky high

She was going out with friends later on

Oh how I wanted to be her

So much freedom

Not a child anymore

Years later I’m in her shoes

I’m in the sea of students

Soaring sky high

I’m greeted by my teacher

We start watching Democracy Now headlines

There is danger out in the world

He asked what my opinion on the headlines was

Why?

Why does he care about what I think?

This is adult stuff

Wait but what happens in the world affects me

I am capable of standing up and creating change

My opinion matters

I walk into my home

My mom needs to have a serious talk with me

I am told she found a job

Great. Amazing. Finally

Wait this was a serious talk

There’s a catch

Here it comes

She won’t be able take or pick me up from school

Ugh great I really am going to be stuck with a babysitter all my life

No

I’m home alone now

What if someone breaks in?

I’m walking home alone

What if someone kidnaps me?

I’m making my own meals

What if I burn down the house?

I’m controlling when I get on my phone and do my homework

Responsibilities

Responsibilities

Responsibilities

This is freedom

So much freedom

Not a child anymore

So much danger in the world
