All I need is hope
So if something happened and I lost all my things
Would that be what hurt me and forever stings?
Or would it be losing all of my family
The ones who have always stood right next to me?
How would life differ without friends and without a home?
Would my life be over if I didn’t have a phone?
I can tell you for sure losing everything would stink
And sadly in reality you can lose them in a blink
What do I need if not them then?
It’s a short four letter word
Something all of us have surely heard
Hope, that’s what I need more than anything else
Without it I would be a barbarian wearing some pelts
I need hope to get through the tough times
I need hope to get through all of life’s binds
Have you ever looked into a hopeless pair of eyes?
As you watch them you can see that a part of them dies
It is hard to watch, it is hard to see
Like the most scared part of their soul is letting out a plea
I remember when my grandma was sitting in the doctors room
She knew she had cancer but was still waiting on the news
As the doctor came in her head went down to just stare at her shoes
Will she get better, or will things turn around?
The thought doesnt stop her tears from hitting the ground
Now I’ve been on the edge in a time I had no hope
Looking at the little bits of light and clinging to it like a rope
So before I chose a phone, or a friend, or anything
I chose the reason why on Sundays that I sing
In life all we have is a hope that the bad times will fade
And that our best friends will no longer put their wrists to a blade
Hope is essential to all of human life
It’s how America came to be, and how we wait to find our wife
And I can’t live without it, hope is a necessity
Because there is no life without hope for me
So I refuse to be hopeless and refuse to be mentally defeated
Until the last bit of my inner strength is finally depleated
