All I Need Scholarship Slam
Some one asked me once, when I was nine,
what I want to be when I grow up.
I told them I'd like to be teacher
so I could boss people around.
They laughed, I was serious.
Three years passed.
they asked what I want to be when I grow up.
I told them I wanted to be a doctor
so I heal the sick people.
They smiled, I grinned.
Another three years and the same question.
what do you want to be when you grow up?
an engineer, I told them.
the nodded their approval.
I smiled back.
im seventeen now and the question remains.
what do you want to be when you grow up?
I turn to them and say
"an artist or a philosopher or perhaps an author"
now they are serious and I am the one who laughs.
the thing is, I am not as sure of what I want to be
as my younger selves.
but each of us needs something to occupy our time
in this world of constant waiting.
so even if I do become a teacher or doctor or engineer.
who I really am is an artist.
who I really am is a philosopher.
who I really am is an author.
and perhaps that's all I need.
