All It Takes is One

She takes a deep breath and pretends not to notice

The sigh she releases comes deep from within her,

It comes from the gaping hole in the heel of her sock,

To the tattered cuffs on her jeans,

From repetitively hitting the asphalt.

It comes from the broken zipper on her jacket,

Holding in what heat it can.

She can feel the sigh work its way through her.

"Good for nothing trailer trash" they call her,

The boys just don't understand, she tells herself.

They're just bored with their own lives.

But maybe that's what I really am.

The emotional pain inside her has nowhere to go,

It's bottled up tight,

Leaving no room for air.

She walks down the halls getting shoved and feeling unwanted,

Maybe I'm not wanted...

But then someone taps her on the shoulder,

Here we go again..

This person has a heart-warming smile,

Making her wonder what they wish to achieve.

They reach out their hand

And she takes it...

Who could this be?

All of her hatred, bottled up emotions,

And unwanted thoughts,

Get washed down the drain with this single handshake.

All thanks to that one person.

That single person with the heart-warming smile,

With the kindness to shake her hand.

That one person made her day,

That person is YOU.
