All My Faith In You

Dear Future,

Hello again old friend.

I’ve been thinking about you a lot recently

But then, I always think about you a lot I suppose.

I hope one day I’ll meet you,

Sometimes I think I already have.

I’ve been working really hard to help you get better,

And I know sometimes you seem hopeless and distant,

But I really think I’ve got something here,

Because now I feel I know you better

And I couldn’t really help you when I didn’t understand

All that you mean to me.

I remember how much you’ve changed through the years.

When I was pigtails and you were cell phones,

And when I was ~boys~, you were four wheels and an engine that barely runs.

And when I was Varsity you were a cap and gown

In Royal Blue

With Golden Tassels

And Hugs and Tears.

You were “It was all worth it”

And “Do you remember when we were young…”.

And now that I’m voting and packing up, I can’t tell if you’re already here

Or close enough to taste.

And I don’t know if I’m ready to finally meet you,

Or scared to lose the fantasy of what you could be.

I’ve worked hard these years,

And hopefully, I’ve played harder,

Because what I’ve learned,

If I’ve learned anything from you,

Is that no matter what

When it’s you looking back at me,

You’re going to see the Best Of Times.

The Lollipops and Five More Minutes,

The Laughing Til We Cried,

The Popsicles Dripping In The Sand,

The Audience’s Applause,

And the Goals We Earned in The Games We Won.

You’re going to see the Best Of Me.

You’re going to be the Best of Me.

And when I’m finally you,

And the sky is covered in blue square hats raining down on me,

And the air is full of laughter and hot June days,

And my face becomes your smile and your tears and your joy,

And my words become your “I made it”,

Right when I finally reach you,

I know that you’ll slip out of my grasp again.

But that’s what I’m counting on.

Because I love you and I need you,

But if I ever met you

I would lose you.

So, old friend,

I know we’ll speak again soon,

And I hope to watch you change some more,

And I’ll always try to help you get better,

But perhaps,

It’s for the best,

That we stay apart

And leave ourselves as each other’s most ideal version

Of me.

Best of wishes and all my faith,

Cass
