All Quiet for a moment on the Anston Front

Nothing but key taps

some litter, a leaf outside?

swirl scuffs their metallic ride

oh and a soft hum of computer

lighter sound than fridge

Nothing

but  a distant swish of cars pass

and far off, high, a plane strains thunder

then I blink once twice, it's gone

Then my words stall

and my fingers and  keys halt

only a mouse scrape clatters the desk

to aim the point onscreen

Suddenly

nails clatter plastically on concrete out back

and the wolfdog gnaws the pilfered wood block

then she laps as the sensor lights flick on

and a siren's horn blares

and she howls and howls and howls
