Allyana's almanac

The snow came down and swallowed all the sound, The world outside is muted, frozen ground. I walk the edges of the lake we knew, Where the ice is thin, and the light bleeds through. I can’t quite place the season, or the year, Since the last true word you whispered disappeared. You are a myth the pines still speak about, A silent figure I can only shout Into the dense white air, where answers die. You asked me once to promise, not to lie, But every breath I take here is untrue, Because I live the part I cannot do— The part where I forget the way you stood, A fragile warmth misunderstood. I see the headlights cut across the glass, And for a second, think that you will pass, A sudden, clear intrusion in the haze. But it’s just the shadow of my wasted days. You are the beautiful design carved into the stone, A beautiful, sharp memory I bear alone. And if I build a fire, pile the wood, It’s only for the heat I thought you understood. But even fire here just turns to smoke, A covenant unsealed, a promise broke. I'm waiting for the static to transmit, A final word from a place I cannot quit.
