Almost Somethings
Everyone is afraid of something.
My mother's fear is heights, and my little brother's is the dark.
My friends are all scared of their uncertain futures, and you were scared of heights.
I'm scared of almost somethings, which is exactly what were were.
"Almost" is a loaded word, full of failed potential-
Just nearly, not quite.
I was almost good enough for you. We almost made it.
We were on the brink of something beautiful, something extraordinary, but we fell too short.
You told me you'd rather stare at my eyes than the cosmos,
that when i rolled out of bed on those lazy sunday mornings, i looked like nothing less than a movie star,
a rose, the epitome of beauty, you'd said.
but i was not enough.
i have this theory that you're scared of heights because subconciously you're scared of falling-
falling and no one being there to catch you but I-
I would have caught you.
I would have held you, tightly,
i would have never let you go.
But you never wanted to take the plunge, never wanted to risk falling
we were on the brink of something beautiful, something extraordinary,
but you could not manage to take the step that would have led us not to destruction but to a path
illuminated by our foolish teenage love.
i would like to say that if you called me up right now i would not fold like a deck of cards
at the sound of your voice, but i would.
i was almost good enough for you.
we almost made it.
