Alone

You walk into that house

you bought together

when he enlisted.

They sent him away

to lay down his life

and make sure we were okay.

The quietest day was the worst.

One explosion changed everything—

You found yourself alone.

The flag-draped coffin brought out,

you realize your love is gone forever—

you find yourself alone.

You walk into that house

you bought together

wishing for some sort of goodbye.

Crying until your eyes are dry,

you lay down to sleep

alone.

Just before your eyes close,

a breeze upon your cheek—

a last kiss he has saved for you—

says you Two are home,

and you will never be alone.
