along the walls

The ghosts

They come at night

I hear the women walking around beneath my pillow

They murmur softly

The children play shadow puppets along the walls

I close my eyes

Pretend not to notice them

They laugh gently

The men

They are the ones to be feared

The glasses they throw burst against the walls

It is impossible to ignore them

They scream loudly
