America, Great?

When was America ever great?

America was born out of the destruction and disgrace of people

Settlers massacred native people

And America wouldn’t have been built without the slaves

America took advantage of people that weren’t like them

And America still treats those people as less today

African Americans suffer at the hands of police brutality

Native American women are the most likely to be affected by sexual abuse

Almost ever race other than white people earns less money in this country

And women aren’t allowed control over their own bodies

America isn’t free

America isn’t great

It never has been

But my hope is that someday it will be

If responsibility and recognition is taken for the atrocities that have been committed and continue to be committed

Then maybe

Maybe someday America could be great
