The American Dream

Some say the American Dream is dead-

as if a dream can die-

because they don’t see how one could come here,

looking for a fresh start, and build themselves

from the ground up.

But here’s where they’re wrong-

not that the american dream is dead-

what the American Dream is.

The American Dream is not to be able to pull yourself up

from the bootstraps,

for what boots were ever handed out but to the

fortunate White Man.

No, the American Dream is,

and always has been,

to be able to look at someone and say “No.” to say

“You can’t tell me what to do

or who to be

or how to live my life, and how dare you even try”

But they are also wrong that the dream is dead.

Because while the government may not uphold it,

America is not the government.

America is not those in power.

America is its people,

and we will stand and fight to be who we are.
