American Dream

Compete.
But only for a man’s eye.
Be strong.
But not too strong.
Be sexy.
But not too sexy.
Be what society tells you to be.

“She had it coming,
Did you see how she was dressed?”
“She didn’t say anything,
Figured it was a yes.”
“She didn’t mean no,
She was playing hard to get.”

Why.
Why can’t women walk down the street by themselves
Without fearing murder or rape?
Why are women mistaken for fragile sex objects
With no important opinion?
Why are little girls as young as eight worried
About their size or appearance?
Why women are only supposed to strive
For marriage.
For children.
For the “American dream.”
The American dream is outdated.

I am strong.
I am ruthless.
I am against tradition.
I am the older generation’s worst nightmare.
I am innovation.
I am feminism.
