From Ancient and New
Love is a raw word.
A word that is exposed and a word that is rough,
Open and whole in a way that other words just can’t quite touch.
There are many ways the word can be filled out, marred, and stuffed.
The ancient Greeks decided that one type of love wasn’t accurate,
It wasn’t enough.
So, they created many words
For many different types of love,
The love from companionship,
The love from passion,
The love from adoration,
The love from everything surrounding love, and all that lies between.
The ancient Greeks decided that one type of love wasn’t accurate.
So, I went and I wondered
Why wasn’t it enough?
Just one love could express so much.
So, I went and I wondered
And I thought way too hard
And I realized the loving that they talked about was different from ours.
The ancient Greeks decided that one type of love wasn’t accurate,
It wasn’t enough
And what they had found about love is something that is often forgotten and snuffed.
Love isn’t lust and love isn’t greed.
Love is just love,
A simple support and a simple need.
The love from a friend that makes sure you’re alright,
The love from a lover who holds you through the night,
The love from a family, and from all ends,
Love is just love
And it can mean many things.
The phrase “I love you” is spoken a lot
And the words that are spoken depend on the thought.
“Because I love you” I am here.
“Because I love you” I tear apart what you hold dear.
“Because I love you” and you quake from fear.
The ancient Greeks decided that one type of love wasn’t accurate,
It wasn’t enough,
And the truth about love,
Is what they searched for,
And what we search for too.
We roam and rove,
Travel and stray,
We find that we get tied up and all our ends frayed,
But the agreement between people,
Ancient and new,
Is that love means love,
Wholesome and true.
Love means love,
Love does not mean abused.
Love means love,
And I write this
Because I love you.
