In and Not Of
I’d like to be a president,
And preside o’er governmental affairs,
To be the point-man of my people,
But alas, I do not care.
I’d like to be a businessman,
To invent, and challenge, and dare,
To be at the forefront of progress,
But alas, I do not care.
I’d like to be a celebrity,
And to stun the press with my flair,
To hold every audience within my thrall,
But alas, I do not care.
I’d like to be a senator,
To fight for laws that are fair,
To champion the rights of the common man,
But alas, I do not care.
I’d like to be an economist,
And wax upon bull and bear,
To save society from monetary chaos,
But alas, I do not care.
I’d like to be a general,
To face enemies with a glare,
To lead battles deciding the fate of nations,
But alas, I do not care.
Yes, I would like to be king of the world,
And to have the whole Earth as my lair,
But praise be to God, I am in and not of,
And for all this, I do not care.
