And Suddenly I Realized

When I looked in the mirror and saw someone I didn’t recognize,

curly hair, red dots speckled my face, a body that was slowing growing,

I blushed

Balked

Scowled

Cried

When I saw that my legs could no longer fit into my jeans or my favorite shirt would have to go to someone else,

I shook

Shuddered

Took a deep breath

And found a way to keep them

When I had to move, again,

I mourned

Sorrowed

And found a solution

When I realized that people are people, that anyone can change, make a mistake, let me down, break my heart, or boil my blood,

I step back

I look

I observe

I gave away those jeans, I grew into my face, I see people the way they see me

Human

And suddenly I realized,

I’m being an adult

Only at seventeen
