"And When the Sun Rises"

And when the sun rises

I think about my grandfather and his battle with cancer

Limping like a homeless dog

Pain you can not describe

Crawling for help

Do not know what to do

Collapsed to the ground

Leg snapped like a twig

Hoping to get better. He lay there still

Screeching ambulance sirens

Going into surgery thinking death

Replace a bone with cold metal

“Can I walk again?” soars through his mind

Learning to walk again is like

Teaching penguins to fly

Weak as a starving dog

Sitting in a wheelchair wishing he

Did not have cancer

Building his muscles day in and day out

Sore as a bone gnawed on for weeks

Leaving rehab as happy as can be

Being reunited with his family

He still thinks and wonders, “will my life ever be normal again?”

Radiate his leg to kill cancer

Losing his hair like a shaved sheep

Going to be like this way for years

Hoping to get better

We wait and see

And when the sun rises

He is nowhere in sight
