And Yet She Smiles
When she was three
She got really sick
So sick she could not go outside
And yet she smiles
Her parents are worried
And the doctors are unsure
Then everyone got scared
When the bruises appeared
And yet she smile
The doctors believe it's
Her kidneys
Her dad jokes that it's
The big C
And yet she smiles
Tests are done
Weeks have gone by
She is getting sicker
And no answers have been found
And yet she smiles
One early morning
Her parents get a call
The doctor's tell them it's cancer
Her mom begins to cry
And yet she smiles
The say the cancer is too far a long
For normal treatment
So they want to try something
That is still in experimental stage
And yet she smiles
So treatment begins
And it doesn't seem to be working
Her family is scared
And treat everyday as if it were her last
And yet she smiles
The treatment is brutal and consist of
Chemo and radiation
She is given shots
In her legs, chest, and spine
And yet she smiles
Some treatment is cruel
Which consisted of six shot in each leg for 14 days
Some days were so hard
That she would cry when she was brought in a room
And yet she smiles
She is given blood transfusions
And many pills and medication are taken
The extent of treatment
Leaves her weary and frail
And yet she smiles
Side effects of treatment are seen
Sores begin to appear in her mouth and throat
And it hurts her with every swallow
And yet she smiles
She doesn't care for sweets
Because of the effects of certain medication
She is not allowed to go outside
For her immune system is way too low
And yet she smiles
Over three years this goes on
And treatment is working
Then one day she is told
The cancer is gone
And she smiles
It has been 12 years now
And scars of treatment can be seen
And check ups have gone from
Daily to yearly
And now I smile
