To Anna
To Anna on your island far from view,
The sea has pushed away your welcome shores.
And I before this journey to ensue
Do wish that there had been another door.
For through this way the wind has worn with woe;
Though straight this narrow path is hard to walk.
The birds have snatched what little seed was sown;
Now naked here I lie, myself to mock.
Far up ahead there glows a fading sign,
A voice that calls to stumble through the night,
To listen to the Word, with death to dine,
While I’m imprisoned by the serpent’s bite.
Yet I will choose to follow to the end
And with Him meet you there.
Your faithful friend
