Another Way

A child of Athene once told me;

“Why, there’s always another way.”

I could only watch with pity, see,

As she marched on,  to her death

She had not lived long, thinking that,

And lasted even less,

Her hope was an admirable trap,

The poor thing stood no chance

A child’s bright, light, eyes

Can see the things to which mine are dull,

Like the opportunity to warm a heart of ice.

And make another half-empty all full.

But that cavern is left  empty of all but echoes

Her footsteps quickly swallowed up,

Just as her dreams so soon before

And a child’s laugh is heard no more.

As that child declared, and believed,

Another way for as in the dark she searched,

They slipped behind, and left her of hope  bereaved.

And then a ghost I was left to seek.

My calls unheard, one after another,

For the children of wisdom, the fools, walk with company  none,

For the same fate had been dealt her sisters and brothers,

Yet, she still searches for the Idol’s home .

I had tried to lead,

from this place astray

I was paid no heed.

Fall she might, and fall she may.
