Anthem to My Healing

The first cut wasn’t the deepest,

Yet proved to hurt the most.

Pressure to this wound,

Left me with blood stained fingers

And a body not quite as clean as it used to be.

Seconds post impact,

My blood began to clot for healing.

Perhaps, an attempt to heal before ready,

But just enough closure to keep me from bleeding out.

Not long after, a scab began to form.

Wound still present, but blood was dry.

Less pain, but too numb.

All feeling left me.

Four senses was left of me.

Heart left broken and battered,

In a body of numb.

Coping they call it.

I picked at the scab for days after, months even.

They said it should have fallen off by day seven,

But it was still there.

The longer I picked and pried, the more it hurt.

The more this epidural began to wear off.

My healing wasn’t easy,

But still I am able to find beauty in this heartbreak.

When the scab fell off and my body began to repair its broken blood vessels,

New tissue grew as did I.

At once a scar was the only thing left of you.

Not quite a reminder of this heartbreak,

More like an anthem to my healing.

Isn’t it awesome how we heal from heartbreak?

How the only thing our bodies ask for is time to do their jobs correctly

How broken tissue and broken hearts piece themselves back together

Pieces of people shattered on bedroom floors

Piece themselves back together to create a more beautiful masterpiece.

Isn't it awesome how the only thing healing will take from us is time?

Soon my heart will be stripped of you.

No wounds to heal or scars to fade.

And I will learn to love again,

But for now,

I will praise this anthem to my healing,

And all of its beautiful it has yet to become.
