Apology
I’m sorry,
Sorry that I was raised to speak my mind,
That I was told to never let
Anyone
See you struggle.
Sorry that I was raised to be
Independent
That I was told, you don’t need a
Man
For shit, and to always have my own.
I’m sorry that I was born with so much
Anger.
That even after all these years,
My culture
Is still angry about slavery.
I’m sorry that the blood of murdered
Black babies.
Pump through my veins, and that they
Live
Through me, for I am there
Afterlife
I am their
Second chance.
I’m sorry that I knew about mixed babies before they were
“Cool”
That our women were
Beat and raped
In front of their families,
That our men were
Mutilated
In front of their sons by
White men
Then they were brainwashed by the scars
Believing that they want to be like you
That their skin isn’t smooth like
Rich dark chocolate,
Like they owe you something
As if they owe you their souls.
So they date your daughters,
And you get upset because you know,
You know that they will do unto your women,
What you’ve done to our mothers,
Our daughters,
Our sisters.
I’m sorry that
it seems like I always have something
to say.
As if I know it
All.
I’m sorry that I
Speak my mind.
That I’m just
A little
Too blunt.
I’m sorry that I
Have no filter.
That I can’t
Seem to learn
Certain subjects.
Sorry that my writing
Doesn’t get published
Because I know that it
Doesn’t meet the
“Appropriate” standards.
