Apple Tree

Apple Tree Today I met a strange fellow He sat beneath an apple tree His hair was of a bright yellow And he called out and spoke to me “Good marrow, my lady What brings you here today?” I thought of him as shady To speak to me this way I am only the age of fifteen And he seemed a good twenty-five Tall, blonde, handsome and lean He seemed so happy and alive “To pick apples,” I replied Then he smiled at me His grin so big and wide Still sitting beneath the tree “I thought it was for me That you came this way” “Nay it was not for thee I must do this for pay” We sat and talked awhile Until it was almost dark He always made me smile And I did not want to part I fared thee well But he bid me stay This was a splendid eve But I had to be on my way We said we would meet again That was a promise that we kept I found out his name was Wren Into my window that night he crept A few years later we wed And now we are madly in love Ever since our vows were said Our love soared like a dove.
