Are You Proud Yet, Daddy?

I’ve seen more empty bottles than I can count Every night, You’d come home drunk You’d hit Mommy “Why are you hitting Mommy?” Stop You’re hurting her I’d Scream And Cry As Mommy would tell Brother and I To hide To lock the door and not let Daddy in But I could still hear them Why won’t Daddy stop? Why won’t he stop? Now Daddy is just Dad I see him sometimes But I see more empty bottles with him Why won’t you stop Dad? You say “It numbs the pain.” You say “I’ve had a long week.” But I’ve had a long life You made sure of that You made me grow up fast You made me mean You made me hate But all I gave you was Love No matter how many bottles I saw I’d pretend I didn’t mind I’ve tried to make you happy Everything I’ve done was to make you proud So maybe you wouldn’t hurt as much But it’s still not enough Why can’t it be enough? I’m sorry Dad I tried I really tried Why won’t Dad stop? Why won’t he stop? I’m sorry Dad Are you Proud yet, Daddy?
