Army Wife
I sit and watch
From my swing on the porch
As the leaves begin to change
The grass starts to fade
And the flowers begin to wither
The birds have taken leave.
How strange this world we reside in
Seems to be to me.
So I sit and watch
As the seasons change
From winter to spring, and summer to fall
Waiting for you to come home
So you can pick me up and twirl me around
I have a pattern that I use
To look once to the left
Then over my right shoulder
Next beyond the horizon
Then come back to our world
Someday days my mind becomes distanced
And is filled with thoughts of my brave hero
My mind starts to travel
To far away places
Where I know your fighting
And I see your sweet face.
“I’ll come back to you someday,
In winter I presume.”
You say to me as if it were true.
Yet I know in my heart
There is an equal chance
That your brave heart may fall
To all those who despise you.
How wrenched are men
That they kill their own brothers
Not knowing of course
That their fates soon will follow.
So as winter turns to spring,
And summer into fall
I sit and wait for
My hero to return home.
