Artificial Pleasure
Open your lids, let in the light
Slowly awake to every new sight.
Get up, no, go back to rest,
Cause there is no point lest
You proceed to make a change.
Life is here, live it well
Otherwise no one will ever care to tell
Who you are and what you have done.
Don’t pretend that you can run
From the person you know you must be.
You know that you can’t stand
In the way of life’s demand
To make a tiny spark,
In a world consumed by the dark,
The spirit of selfish ambition.
How can one alter the role
They’ve been molded to play?
Not shaped by their soul,
But by the challenges of each day
On the planet possessed by conformity.
Taught from day number one
Don’t give up until you’ve won,
This game of getting ahead
Not slowing down ‘til your dead.
What kind of life is that?
No legacy left behind,
Just a heap of messes to unwind,
From the destruction and decay
Of our own will of the day to day.
No empathy for the ones we crush.
Idolizing the heroes who make
It to the top of the pile, the fake
Assumption of security and peace,
That only proceeds to increase
Our desperate need for something more
Generation after generation
Nobody in this “great” nation
Seems to get our greatest need
The pressing desire to succeed
Has mesmerized everyone’s focus
When, tell me, will we ever
See in the span of forever
That the ultimate longing of our
Being is to let go of the power
And love and be loved
