ASL and Me

The first women president, a senator, a governor;

That’s what she’s gunna be.

A millionaire, a CEO, a world famous author;

That’s what she’s gunna be.

My parents always told me

What I was to be.

That’s not what I want;

I want to be me.

I don’t want to be famous or to rule the world alone;

That’s just not me.

I want to be loved and welcomed

In a group that is all my own.

I found my home away from home

In a place I’d never looked.

With a group of people often ignored

But never ever by me.

They hear with their eyes

And talk with their hands.

They welcomed me right in;

As if I was their own.

I want to do whatever I can

To help these people who have helped me.

That’s why I want to be

An Interpreter for my extended Deaf family.
