Asleep Forever
He laid there, awake and aware
He laid there, hearing and seeing
He laid there, feeling and tasting
He laid there, breathing and smelling
He laid there, alive
As he lay, he sensed fear and loneliness
As he lay, he heard whaling and saw despair
As he lay, he felt pain and tasted blood
As he lay, he inhaled smoke and was infused with death
As he lay, he started dying
He was here, watching and crying
He was here, screaming and waving
He was here, in agony and disgust
He was here, coughing and smelling the pits of Hell
He was here, as a soldier not fighting for his country, but for himself. And for that, we will lay beside him today. Knowing that he is asleep forever… in peace.
