Attention Must Be Paid
Attention must be paid–
to the everyday
to the helplessness we feel we pay
to the tone in the goodbyes we say
to the things for which we do not pray
to the way we leave and the reasons we stay.
It must be paid.
Attention must be paid–
to the norm
to the calm within the storm
to the nooks our fleeting daydreams swarm
to the anxieties we do not form
to the time it takes our judgments to warm.
It must be paid.
Attention must be paid–
to disgrace
to the challenges we do not face
to the thoughts we neglect to erase
to every memory we ever replaced
to the people that vanished with a trace.
It must be paid.
Attention must be paid.
It must be paid.
The collectors are ringing and
the debt is weighed.
Attention must be paid.
