Authentic Love
It is not hard to discern the sincerity of someone’s love.
We all know how it feels to be properly loved,
And we all know how it feels to suffer from relationships
That use the word “love” in vain.
After a series of failed and successful friendships and relationships,
I think I may have figured it out,
This whole thing about love.
Love is a great act of the will.
It is a choice.
An unceasing, unconditional, ever-present choice.
Only those who are willing to sacrifice their desires for the beloved
Are capable of true love.
Love is freeing.
It uplifts, protects, and cherishes.
It allows you to be yourself,
Without trying to become someone else.
You’ll know you’re truly loved when you feel appreciated for simply being you.
Love doesn’t always feel good.
But that’s to be expected, because, after all,
Love is a virtue
And all virtue comes through suffering.
Authentic love is the kind that says:
I will put your needs before mine.
I will try my hardest to be understanding.
I will let go of my selfish desires.
I will become a better version of myself for you.
And I attest all of this to be true
Because, as I will strive to always show you,
I do truly love you.
