Awake
Faint whisperings ghost across the edge of my consciousness,
While the dark embrace of sleep yearns to pull me back into the cavernously empty
Void that cannot be considered slumber, but is not quite wakefulness either,
Soft, incandescent rays of sun that sneak through the gaps in my blinds,
Illuminate the speckles of dust that lazily swim through the air,
It’s in these quiet moments where I notice the sound of my own heartbeat,
A spider scuttles across the web of cracks in my ceiling,
And I become aware of the faint smell of alcohol and cigars that still cling to my discarded clothing,
A distance horn blows but the cacophonous soundtrack of daily life is noticeably absent,
Shadows and light melt into a golden haze,
And all of a sudden I’m suspended in time,
Where memories do not haunt and dreams don’t beg for me to return,
And my pulsing soul resonates in unadulterated silence,
And nothing is left but the pure sensation of being alive,
The slowly fills with light, erasing all darkness,
Until there is nothing left but warmth and sunshine.
