Back in a time

Back in a time not long ago Groups of people fought to end inequality and civil woes They marched and protested Though daunting it seemed However, they could not give up on the outcome of which they dreamed Some mentally perished Others lost their lives But that did not stop the movement’s perseverance and ability to thrive Back in a time not long ago Racism was mounting along with racial divide Yet champions of courage Continued the fight with both vigor and pride To stay motivated and energized They sang songs like Swing Low Sweet Chariot and This Little Light of Mine And were led by people like Martin Luther King In those most challenging times Back in a time not long ago They encountered ups and downs Achievements and setbacks Yet their fortitude never died Why you ask? They saw the bigger picture and victory on the other side Back in a time not long ago They joined, both black and white To end the injustices of the time’s sordid plight They continued the journey Though the road seemed so long Until they reached the destination And put an end to the Civil Rights movement’s sad song. Here we are now Not long ago, but today Basking in the movement and In the path of those who paved the way Let their efforts not be in vain But something that we treasure And lest we not forget why we now reap some of the pleasures.
