Backyard Squirrel


Like the cat with eyes closed, we watched him get closer and closer to the food tray and begin consumption as if no one was watching...then the food tray fell: victim of fierce wind. Food now hung in a bird feeder from a tree branch...the squirrel climbed the tree, went down the branch but dared not traverse the rope... We watched him inch ever so closer and fall from his ambition as days went by and then, one afternoon, as I glimpsed out the window, he clutched the knot with his hind legs while his body hovered over the feeder and ate the seeds, ah, the forbidden seeds at last, I saw him smirk....
