balance

balance

i don’t think

about equilibrium when i’m at your side.

i don’t have to try

to make you see through flaws

like flecked, dripping honey

& every other time:

i break the glass because

i pull the rope too hard

& this time:

you know just how to hold me without

losing track of my soul, how to

count my tender veins and trace them

on my skin &

i trust you

like the sea trusts the sky

i don’t think

about falling when i’m at your side.

i know your arm is there to catch me

if the tight rope gets too thin.

the push/pull, the perfect weight— you are

what i never thought was possible.

& every nerve ending on fingertips, every

strand of hair & every inch

of tender, warm skin:      trust.

& that is the water of the rain, the golden

thread tying bone to bone.

you show me

how to live the world in saturation, how to

scream from rooftops and

gently melt into setting sunlight. you teach me

that best harmony

comes effortless
