Ballad

The Thief

The sadness it surges, it swallows you whole,

It won’t let go, no mercy will it show.

The sadness it’s strong and it lingers too long.

It tugs and it pulls, it scratches to stay,

I’ve seen it, it knows, and it comes back to play.

The sadness it’s strong and it lingers too long.

You used to smile, your laughter it won,

You skipped and jumped and followed the sun.

The sadness it’s strong and it lingers too long.

That girl of mine with the light from within.

A firefly swooning, lighting up you spin.

The sadness it’s strong and it lingers too long.

But that light is dim, at times snuffed out,

Like a storm cloud that swallows, the sun strewn about.

The sadness it’s strong and it lingers too long.

The sorrow it comes, no warning at all,

But I am still here no matter how far you fall.

The sadness it’s strong and it lingers too long.

The tears they drown you, they surge and they flood,

Like darkness it comes, drags you deep in the mud.

The sadness it’s strong and it lingers too long.

But yes I’m still here, I’m strong and I’m taught,

I stay up above even when you are not.

The sadness it’s strong and it lingers too long.

My arms will not tug and they will never scratch,

They wrap and they squeeze and provide just a patch,

Cause the sadness it’s there, I know it so well,

But so is that girl, when light breaks from her cell.
