The Ballad of My Mother

Melanie is my mother’s name.

Born to an abusive dad.

She knew that he was the one to blame,

For the sadness that her mom had.

She cut wood all day and night,

With her sister by her side.

Working like a slave for the white,

Until her ropes were untied.

With the death of her unloving father,

Her sister chose to leave.

Because of a fight with their mother.

And left her there to grieve.

Many years later she met my dad,

While working in a factory.

He was as charming as a lad,

And bought her an accessory.

Together they raised three loving kids.

In a tiny town in Kansas.

Dad took a job working with pigs.

While she found her happiness.

Now she is a mother of five.

And a hero to us all.

With courage she will succeed and thrive.

Her strength is all but small.

Little did my mother know.

The oldest had a secret.

His girlfriend had the belly to show,

And they decided to keep it.

Now a grandma to a boy,

Love flows through her heart.

She is overwhelmed with joy.

Her love is a work of art.
