Barbed Wire
Thankfully the playgrounds
that I grew up on
were not lined with barbed wire fences.
They confine kids’ ambitions
to what the adults want the kids to dream about.
Instead of spacemen, or firefighters
kids need more realistic dreams
like accountants or salespeople.
Adults put fences onto kid's playgrounds,
to make sure the kids have fun,
but don't wander
too far from the jungle gym.
In doing so ambitions are restricted
to the limited imagination of their adult teachers.
Barbed wire fences add another part to the equation.
That if a child's creativity exceeds the boundaries of the wood chips
then they won't just be blocked,
but punished and physically hurt.
Blood might spill
because an inner city kid dreamt of being a ninja.
Unable to break the chain link fences
they build more fences to protect their own kids.
How can the youth pull their community of desuetude?
When their playgrounds are lined with barbed wire.
