The Basics of the Environment: An Ode to Algae

Alga is usually a single celled organism,

And does not partake in any ostracism,

Instead algae tend to live in colonies,

Typically floating on top of the seas.

Autotrophs is what they are,

Making energy, using sunlight from afar.

They can perform photosynthesis

While living in the wilderness.

Extra nutrients can cause them to bloom

And now the other plants and animals have no room.

Alga is considered a eukaryote,

And on water is where it tends to float.

They are categorized as protists,

And some are so small they can go unnoticed.

Green algae led to plants on land,

Which allowed for evolution to expand.

Their life cycle includes sexual and asexual reproduction,

Where meiosis and mitosis are used for an organisms construction.

Flagella is what they use to move,

While they serve as aquatic food.

Alga plays an important part in the ecosystem,

And now you have some algae wisdom.
