The Battlefield

What is this,

This stench that permeates the air?

The smell of copper,

The smell of minerals,

It haunts me.

Never leaving,

Never changing,

What have I done?

Blood, blood everywhere,

So much blood, so many dead.

Why did I feel this?

That sound,

Such an innocent sound,

The sound of liquid falling to earth.

That sound,

Such an innocent sound,

The sound of a life extinguished.

Why do I hear it?

My mouth is dry.

I taste the dust,

I taste the decay,

If there is hell on earth,

This is surely it.

I taste,

 Not by my will;

But because I breath,

I will forevermore taste death's aroma

Why should I be redeemed?

I do not feel human.

I can't feel human.

All the things I have done,

I have carried the dead,

I have carried the dying.

They both are limp,

They both are drenched in blood,

All the things I have seen.

Their eyes are cold and dead,

As if their souls had rejected them.

God have mercy on them,

For they have seen,

What I have seen.

We will never forget,

The horror that is the battlefield.
