To Be

The way I see it,

most matter doesn’t get

to be conscious of itself.

After that everything else

is just sort of --

extra.

Merely to be

and to be aware

that you are ,

despite the whispers of Descartes

is more than most atoms get.

Eventually we’ll all

be swept away and scattered

to mix in with the rest,

but for now

I revere the fact

that for a blip in more

time and space

than I can handle

I am.
