To Be

To be an artist is to be immortal
     Inconsequential
             Inspirational

To be a painter
     A musician
         A poet

To bear your soul for all to see
And be shot down by society
And say fuck them because you
                    Don't care

Is to be feared
     And fearless
            And fearful

To be a romantic is to be childish but
To be childish is to know nothing of love
To be anything in this world
     Is to be alive
         And breathing
                And connected
To be
    To simply exist
        What a strange
                   Beautiful
                       Terrifying concept
To be
    To be what
But a jumbled mass of nerves
               Consciousness made of flesh
                             The universe personified
To be anything
     Anything at all
It's enough to make anyone insane
At least those of us who actually think
