To Be Black Me

To be black Me

Is a game that I’m not sure that I’m playing well

No one will ever see

The caged bird in me that is confined to its cell in the heart of hell

As I pray to white Jesus, the Heavenly Host

Because my life has been more of a crystal stair than most

To be black is to be angry

Rage is the emotion that defines us

Hatred is what drives us

Racism is what moves us

When I hear black

I hear the clanking of chains

As the lessons flow in my brain

Of what remains

Of the strain

From the time when my people we slain

Was it all in vain

Oh to be black

I refuse to believe that our creation was a joke

That God choked

My life has has been more than a crystal stair than most

No one will ever see

How I am black and me
